THE SPANISH ECONOMY

The Spanish economy consists of three sectors:

·         Primary: Primary sector industries cultivate and extract raw materials from nature. Industries include fishing, mining and agriculture.

·         Secondary: Secondary sector industries change raw materials into manufactured products.

·         Tertiary: Tertiary sector industries provide services. Spain´s main services include tourism, transport, retail and the public sector (education, health care…)

Primary sector

·         Fishing includes deep-sea fishing and coastal fishing.

·         Mining is still a significant industry in Spain. The main raw materials extracted are coal and iron.

·         Agriculture includes:

o   Arable farming. We split arable farming into two categories:

§  Dryland farming: crops only need rainwater to grow.

§  Irrigated farming:  crops are given extra water to help them grow.

o   Livestock farming in Spain includes rearing cattle, sheep, pigs and poultry.

Tertiary sector

·         Tourism in Spain. Tourism is one of the most important services in the Spanish economy. The main types of tourism that exist in Spain are:

o   Beach tourism:  the  Costa Brava, Costa Dorada, Costa Blanca, Costa del Sol, Islas Baleares and Islas Canarias.

o   Winter tourism: The Pyrenees, Sierra Nevada, Sistema Ibérico, Cordillera Cantábrica and Cordillera Central.

o   Cultural tourism: Madrid, Toledo, Sevilla, Barcelona, Granada and Santiago de Compostela.

·         Transport is a service and forms part of the tertiary sector. We can use :

o   Public transport: transport that everyone can use.

o   Private transport: transport that we own or control.
